Divide Production Environment and Development Environment

Are there any way to divide the environment to Production and Development?Im too afraid to merge changes immediately into the Production environment. I would be very happy if the way is able to merge changes of Development environment into Production environment easily and quickly.

I do it by maintaining a production copy and a development copy, and using App Upgrade to copy the development copy into the production copy when it's ready.
