Check that you don’t have for example app or sheet formula in that column.

There is another app that accesses the table. But there is no spreadsheet formula.

Double check that you unselect the original KEY before selecting a new KEY. Only one column should be marked as the KEY. That field should also have no App Formula or Spreadsheet formula (make sure to check the column details “auto compute” drawer for spreadsheet formulas as they can show there and not in the sheet)

Make sure you check the Info > Errors tab for Warnings.

There are often warning when you try to make a change that the system detects has a problem.
