User access with multiple emails

I am using Office 365 security to allow my whitelist of users to access the app, but one of them is set up so her primary corporate email is (using the sample name “Kristen Smith” at xyz corp) ksmith@xyz.com but you can also reach her with kristen@xyz.com

I have whitelisted both of her email address formats but she is unable to sign in with either… I have 2 other users who hit this hangup once in a while and for some reason I have to switch them to their alternate address but that is not fixing it this time.
