display time without seconds

Hello I am displaying a col that has date and time formatted in google sheets as:

YYMMDD_HH:MM

When I bring it into app sheet it displays as: 

MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM:SS XM

I would like it to display as : 

YYMMDD_HH:MM

or at not display year or the seconds: 

MM/DD HH:MM XM

I've tried a virtual col but have not had luck with the formatting. 

I don't want to change it to text because the user will need to change the times of the rows.

There's also the second argument of the TEXT() expression if you want to reformat the value into another column.
