Background sync in Safari (latest version of Big Sur [11.2.2])

Today I noticed that background sync didn’t seem to be working when I used my app in the Safari browser. I tried the same app on my iPhone and in the Google Chrome browser and it the background syncing worked well there. The problem is only in Safari as far as I can see. Last night I updated my Mac to 11.2.2. I wonder if that might not have something to do with this. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

P.S. Manual sync works on Safari too – it just doesn’t seem to want to initiate the background sync.
