Bulk select checkbox does not appear in dashboard view / header not viewable in table view

It seems that the bulk selection checkbox does not appear if viewed via dashboard. If I view my table in a separate view, I have the checkbox option:

But if I put that same table in a dashboard, I no longer have the checkbox option:

Since I only have the one view in my dashboard, you’d think I would just go with the normal stand alone table view. However, then I also lose the headers in table view. If I click approved from the table view I get:

Notice there is no ‘approved’ header or maybe it’s called a subhead.

But if I click approved from my dashboard view, I get:

Notice I can see the ‘approved’ subhead.

Is there no view option where I can get both the header and the bulk selection checkboxes?
