The dropdown may be populated with data from any table in the app. So if the sheet you want to get data from is attached to a table in the app, you can populate a dropdown with that data. But AppSheet cannot access sheets that are not connected to a table in the app.

When I am connecting a table[column] within the app I am getting an NaN return value in place of a dropdown both fields are set to text any ideas what could be causing this?

Please post a screenshot of the configuration screen for the column that uses the dropdown, including at least the Type Details, Valid If and Initial Value settings.
