Field with NUMBER() Validation allows Alphanumeric Entry

I have a field with the following validation in place:

When I test the validation by entering an alphanumeric number in the field, it seems to work as expected but I have an alphanumeric entry in the table today and wondered how that could happen.

Users normally scan into this field, is it possible the scanned info bypasses the validation?

I wouldnโ€™t think so. Are there any other ways that column might be populated? Maybe by an action?
