All the sample Apps I have viewed that require user input (like dropdowns) have solid borders around the field and some have shading. Can I apply such formatting?

If I understand what youโre referring to, this is a difference in UX โbrandingโ, where this new formatting is being slowly rolled out to more and more accounts/apps. Eventually theyโll all be the same.
