I would like the ability to either: hide the side menu or always show it

I like having the side menu. But as I understand you cannot force that side menu to always show. I like to be able to hide it in some of my apps, but others I would like to be able to always show it:

I would like to be able to have icons there instead of text (as well). I believe the side menu can be very useful and also hard to remember its there (for some users).

They were hinting some time ago about introducing a fixed side-menu for browser apps.
