FYI, Microsoft has provided an explanation of the outage caused a few days ago.
It appears that while they were able to fix the core problem within a few minutes, the fact that DNS information is cached widely caused their customers to have problems for hours afterward.
I appreciate their thoroughness in publishing a post-mortem of the root cause of the problem.
