Show total of a created list

Hi Guys
I am new to all of this.
I have created a family tree search function which works fine.
What i want to do is when I search an item & create a list Eg. all people that served in Military how can I show a total as a number on the bottom bar of my app.
Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated
