Why does AppSheets add random quotes to entries

When I add a numeric value to one of my fields, or if AppSheets adds a numeric value programmatically, the value comes in with a single ’ mark before the number.

How do I stop this from happening?

Format the spreadsheet column explicitly as plain text.
