Why does inline table disappear when child table set to updates only?

hey guys anyone know why it would be the when a child table is set to updates only the inline table disappears from the parent detail view?

I would like to have daily time cards show for an employee detail view but dont want anyone to be able to add a time card since they’re pre-populated.
