Column rename not persisting in Slice

I have a spreadsheet without column headers. When I import it into AppSheet, the columns are auto-named using the first data value - for example one column is named “3/23/2014 12:00:00 AM”. So I clicked on table in the “Columns” tab and gave the columns descriptive names, eg. “Date”. So far so good.

But then I created a new slice and when I save I get an error in the slice - “Unable to find column ‘3/23/2014 12:00:00 AM’”.

What is the right way to rename a column so that the change applies everywhere?

Eh, because I never needed them before? If the answer is “change the spreadsheet”, I can live with that. But I was surprised that a change to column name didn’t persist when creating slices.
