Remove weblink to images in created PDF

When the template is used as a PDF attachment template, the HTML-to-PDF conversion web service retrieves the image using the image URL contained in the HTML file and includes the image in the resulting PDF file.

So, it seems the generated pdf does not embed the image, it maintains the link to the image in order to display it.

How do I not have an active link to the image in the PDF?

It does embed the image, but at the same time it adds the link.

Where would you insert the img format string? 

You need an HTML/CSS template, won't work with MSWord nor GDocs afaik
